IGWRT's - Internal Monologue "Unwanted Guest"

Unwanted Guest

I recall the day we fist met,
you tried to settle in, get comfortable,

saw you as quite a threat.
A gracious host I was not, vulnerable,

more than asked you to leave.
I removed your presence

quite forcibly.  My husband, I believe
was a bit more generous, his acquiescence

not a surprise. Thankful to have you
any which way, happily co-existing

all these years.  A hullabaloo
I no longer raise, insisting

instead your true nature, disguised.

This is for Imaginary Garden with Real Toads "Internal Monologue".  Yes, I've been having this "conversation" for years.

This poem definitely whets my appetite for the back story. Well expressed.

... it's about my grey hair, Mary! ha ha If it was a woman or some such other, I wouldn't be so "accommodating" :)

and about my husbands grey hair... he would rather have it than go bald :) I suppose it could have been about a pet, another lover, aging parents or... well, I'm sure there are many scenarios.

Well, I was in the ballpark at least! I love the vase in the photo, and thought maybe you hated it so sat it outside under tons of petunias!

Susan, that is so funny. Hadn't even thought of that angle. Maybe I should have given a few more hints that it was grey hair... but then, perhaps that is the beauty of poetry... one can decide for oneself.

I liked that you left this open to our interpretation on first reading, but I did laugh when I saw it was about grey hairs - a losing battle I know very well.

Rejection and acceptance at its best.
Love the planter and tangled mess of flowers full of colour and washed out grays.

I love the explanation! I was guessing some invasive plant. That does sound like quite the battle raging.

I'm giggling .. until I read comments I considered every species known to man (the plant killing kind) ~ never imagining the lovely Margaret concerned about a few errant greys!

I'm so glad you cleared up the Mystery Guest - hee hee. I thought it was the petunias, too. I LOVE my gray hair - it is actually a sort of silvery red as I had red hair. I figure people pay money to have such tones put in their hair so I am happy with it, tho my family likely would prefer me to not be quite as "natural" as I am. I have always shunned Glamor.

I was confused also...first I thought another woman than I thought you disliked the pot and your husband insisted upon keeping it...lol but it looked like something you liked...either way the monologue was great, drew me right in! :)

Yes, I'm just now getting to this challenge...ha!

Another woman's face in your garden ?
even if it is only the lower half!
Whatever I got a chuckle out of it!

ha i dont mind grey hair...you had me wondering there...and with the plant pic and that it might be that found it humorous...i think grey can add a nice touch of beauty...

I see a pair of lips in that plant pot. Like cheeks and chin and the rest is a mess of flowery >>> HAIR! hahaha
You might want to change the last word in the first line from fist to first :)

I don't mind grey hair or wrinkles, I look at it as they are battle scars or medals of life and, I'm proud to say I earned every single one of 'em. ;)

Fabulous. You really had me guessing! At first I thought another woman, too, and then maybe a mangy dog or a bad-tempered cat.
I'm with your husband, though, I'd rather have my grey hair than no hair at all. It's been grey for years but is now coming out every time I comb or brush it. Scary! Also not good for the drains.
My husband has a bald spot but it's at the back where he can't see it, so he doesn't care at all.
