"Prince of Darkness"

Prince of Darkness

December's night breeze
rustles the leaves, rumples
forest's underbelly

betraying sanctuary's silence.

A haloed bronze statue
shines upon bared branches,
hears the pious prayers

of deliverance;

with angelic wings swoops down,
unearths the devout. Yet even
the Prince of Darkness gives thanks

before devouring his evening meal.

This has such a great feel to it and I love thinking the forest has an underbelly.

I want to echo Brian's comment - pondering a grateful Prince of Darkness - what angelic features can remain in the demons of night? So fun to contemplate.

Ha! Profound truths in this poem, Margaret! And should he/she eat the evil and tainted? No! Gratitude.
